Mian Sheraz Javaid concluded a series of high-profile meetings in July 2024 with key members of Bhandari Law and Partners, one of Nepal’s most distinguished corporate law firms. During his visit, Sheraz had the privilege of meeting Nabin Bhandari, the Managing Partner of Bhandari Law and Partners, alongside his father, Thahar Bahadur Bhandari, the firm’s Founding and Senior Partner.
Mian Sheraz Javaid had the pleasure of meeting Svetlana Vasileva-Stratenwerth, the esteemed Secretary General of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA), at the Ciarb Kenya 40th International ADR Conference in June 2024. The conference, which marked a significant milestone in the operations of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) in Kenya, provided a vibrant platform for the exchange of ideas and insights on the evolving landscape of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
In a significant and heartfelt exchange at the Ciarb Kenya International ADR Conference, Mian Sheraz Javaid had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan Wood FCiarb, the President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb), in June 2024. The conference, which celebrated 40 years of advancing alternative dispute resolution (ADR), provided the perfect backdrop for Sheraz to reflect on the lasting impact of Ciarb’s work and to engage in thought-provoking discussions with Wood, an individual he described as “truly admirable.”
Mian Sheraz Javaid hosted Mr. Muhammad Saleem Ahmad Ranjha, a distinguished professional with a diverse background in public service and entrepreneurship. Ranjha’s career includes serving as Collector of Customs, Member of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), CEO of the FBR Foundation, Additional Secretary of the Board of Investment (BOI), and currently, Chairman of the Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs (OPEN) Lahore. He is also the Founding Director of Akhuwat, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating poverty through microfinance. The meeting between Sheraz and Ranjha provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the multifaceted role of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) in the field of dispute resolution.
In July 2024, Mian Sheraz Javaid had the opportunity to meet with the Chair of the Nepal International ADR Centre (NIAC), Dr. Mukti Rijal, in an enlightening session that centred on the rising importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Nepal and elsewhere. Organised by Mr. Matrika Prasad Niraula, Director NIAC, it turned out to be an enriching discussion of current trends, challenges, and opportunities within the ADR space.
In May 2024, Mian Sheraz Javaid met Claudia Salomon, the President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, and Alexander Fessas, Secretary General of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, at the 2nd ICC Tokyo Arbitration Day. Sheraz noted that their leadership has been integral in encouraging the ICC to be the ultimate provider of arbitration services all over the world.
Mian Sheraz Javaid successfully concluded Session 1 of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) Module 1 course on "Law, Practice & Procedure of International Arbitration" in Islamabad. The session marked a significant milestone in Pakistan’s journey to strengthening its arbitration capacity, as legal professionals from across the region gathered to learn the foundational principles and practical applications of international arbitration.
In September 2024, Mian Sheraz Javaid met with several key individuals from the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) during an important gathering. The meeting, which took place on the final day of Deborah Tomkinson’s tenure as Secretary General, also included Gitanjali Bajaj, Vice President of ACICA and Partner at DLA Piper.
Mian Sheraz Javaid’s article is an in-depth exploration of Pakistan’s construction sector, one that is undergoing rapid development and expansion. The article examines the progress the sector has made as well as important changes taking place in the regulatory framework. Particularly, Sheraz focuses on the recent updates to the Pakistan Engineering Council's (PEC) Conditions of Contract, which is an integral development that promises to align Pakistan’s construction industry with international best practices and modern standards.
As of 2021, Pakistan’s legal system was encumbered by a staggering total case docket of 2,159,655 cases, a number that highlighted the urgent need for reforms and more efficient dispute resolution.
Mian Sheraz Javaid met with Thara Gopalan, Regional Vice President (Asia) at the AAA-ICDR Foundation, during his visit to Singapore in August, 2024. The meeting, described as both insightful and productive, focused on the evolving landscape of arbitration in Pakistan and the valuable lessons to be drawn from Singapore’s position as a global leader in international dispute resolution.
